Climbing Iliniza North – The Perfect Acclimatization Peak in Ecuador
Iliniza North (5,126 m / 16,817 ft) is one of Ecuador’s most popular acclimatization climbs and an excellent objective for adventurous hikers and aspiring mountaineers. Located approximately 55 km southwest of Quito within the Ilinizas Ecological Reserve, the mountain offers spectacular panoramic views and an exciting high-altitude scrambling experience.
The Iliniza Massif consists of two neighboring peaks: Iliniza North and Iliniza South (5,248 m / 17,217 ft). Thousands of years ago, both summits formed part of a single volcanic cone. However, a massive eruption caused the eastern and western sides of the crater to collapse, leaving behind the two distinct peaks separated by a one-kilometer-wide saddle.
Iliniza North vs. Iliniza South
Although the two summits are connected geographically, their climbing conditions are very different. The higher Iliniza South retains glaciers and receives more wind and moisture, while Iliniza North is primarily a rocky mountain with only occasional snow cover during the wetter months of December and January.
Because of its non-glaciated terrain and moderate technical difficulty, Iliniza North is considered one of the best preparation climbs for higher Ecuadorian volcanoes such as Cotopaxi, Cayambe, or Chimborazo.
Climbing Iliniza North
The ascent begins with a gradual hike toward the saddle separating the two peaks. From there, the route follows the ridge known as La Ensillada along the western side of the mountain.
As the climb progresses, hikers encounter several enjoyable scrambling sections involving rocky outcrops and large boulders. These sections are relatively easy but add an adventurous alpine feel to the climb. The final approach to the summit includes a short but exciting scramble over volcanic rock, ending at the small iron cross that marks the top.
While strong hikers can complete the ascent in one long day, many climbers choose a 2-day itinerary with an overnight stay at the refuge to improve acclimatization and enjoy a more relaxed experience in the mountains.
Spectacular Summit Views
From the summit of Iliniza North, climbers are rewarded with breathtaking views of Ecuador’s famous Avenue of the Volcanoes. On clear days, it is possible to see neighboring peaks including Iliniza South, Cotopaxi, and Chimborazo rising above the Andes.
An Ideal Acclimatization Climb
Iliniza North is the perfect combination of high-altitude trekking, easy scrambling, and mountaineering preparation. Whether as a standalone adventure or as part of a larger Ecuador volcano expedition, this climb offers an unforgettable experience in the Ecuadorian Andes.
