Climbing Chimborazo – Ecuador’s Highest Mountain

Climbing Chimborazo (6,310 m / 20,702 ft) is one of the most iconic mountaineering experiences in South America. Located about 150 km southwest of Quito, this extinct volcano is the highest mountain in Ecuador. Due to the Earth’s equatorial bulge, Chimborazo’s summit is also the farthest point from the center of the Earth, making it the closest point to the sun.

Reaching the summit of Chimborazo requires glacier equipment, excellent physical fitness, stamina, and proper acclimatization to high altitude. Although the climb is considered moderate under normal conditions, hard ice, strong winds, and rapidly changing weather can make the ascent highly demanding. Therefore, good preparation and experienced mountain guides are essential for a safe and successful expedition.

Climbing Chimborazo: What to Expect

The climb can be completed in as little as 2 days, but this option is only recommended for climbers who already have glacier travel experience, excellent physical condition, and proper acclimatization.

For most climbers, we strongly recommend a 3 to 7-day acclimatization program, which may include:

  • Acclimatization hikes on volcanoes below 5,000 m
  • Glacier skills training, including crampon techniques, ice axe use, and rope travel
  • Progressive high-altitude trekking to help your body adapt to the Andes

Main Routes to the Summit

There are two main routes for climbing Chimborazo:

El Castillo Route

The most popular and moderate route to the summit.

North Face Route

A more technical and physically demanding climb, recommended for experienced mountaineers.

In both cases, our certified local mountain guides adapt the itinerary according to your experience, fitness level, and climbing goals.

Tailor-Made Chimborazo Expeditions

We create customized itineraries designed around your available time, previous experience, and expectations. Many climbers choose to combine Chimborazo with ascents such as Cotopaxi or Cayambe, or join longer programs like the Ecuador Volcanoes Expedition.

More than just a mountain climb, Chimborazo is a journey through history and spectacular Andean landscapes. Following the footsteps of Edward Whymper, who first summited the mountain in 1880, you will experience the beauty of Chimborazo National Park, home to vicuñas, wild llamas, and breathtaking high-altitude scenery.
