Climbing Cayambe – Ecuador’s Glacier-Covered Equatorial Volcano

Climbing Cayambe (5,790 m / 18,996 ft) is one of the most rewarding mountaineering experiences in Ecuador. Located about 70 km northeast of Quito, Cayambe is the third-highest mountain in the country and the only major mountain in the world crossed directly by the equator. This unique location allows climbers to stand with one foot in the northern hemisphere and the other in the southern while surrounded by spectacular glaciated landscapes.

Cayambe is an active stratovolcano, although its last recorded eruption occurred in the late 18th century. Today, the mountain is best known for its beautiful glaciers, wide snow slopes, and accessible high-altitude climbing routes, making it an excellent objective for both beginner mountaineers and experienced climbers.

Climbing Cayambe: What to Expect

Ascending Cayambe requires glacier equipment, proper acclimatization, and excellent physical condition. Although the normal route is considered technically moderate, weather conditions, crevasses, and sections of hard ice can significantly increase the difficulty of the climb. Therefore, preparation and experienced guidance are essential for a safe and successful ascent.

The climb can be completed in as little as 2 days for climbers who already have glacier travel experience and are well acclimatized. However, for most participants, we recommend a 3 to 5-day program that includes:

  • Acclimatization hikes on nearby volcanoes below 5,000 m
  • Glacier training sessions, including crampon use, ice axe techniques, and rope travel
  • Progressive high-altitude overnights to help adapt to the Andes

Main Route to the Summit

The standard route begins from the Ruales Oleas Berge Refuge at 4,600 m. Summit attempts usually start around midnight in order to reach the top at sunrise, when conditions are generally more stable.

During the ascent, climbers travel across glaciers, navigate crevassed terrain, and steadily climb toward Cayambe’s impressive summit dome. The combination of glacier travel, altitude, and panoramic Andean scenery makes this climb one of Ecuador’s classic mountaineering objectives.

The Cayambe Climbing Experience

Many climbers choose to combine Cayambe with other famous Ecuadorian volcanoes such as Cotopaxi or Chimborazo as part of a longer mountaineering expedition. In addition, Cayambe is often used as an ideal preparation climb before attempting more technical or higher-altitude peaks in the Andes.

Beyond the climb itself, Cayambe offers a remarkable natural and cultural experience. The surrounding Cayambe-Coca National Park is home to vast páramo landscapes, unique high-altitude flora, and diverse Andean wildlife.
