Ecuador Volcanoes Expedition – Climb Cayambe, Cotopaxi, Antisana & Chimborazo

Ecuador Volcanoes Expedition is the ultimate high-altitude adventure for mountaineers seeking to climb the country’s most iconic peaks. This carefully designed program combines acclimatization hikes, cultural experiences, and guided ascents of Cayambe (5,790 m), Antisana (5,758 m), Cotopaxi (5,897 m), and Chimborazo (6,310 m). With the support of professional-certified guides, you will safely experience Ecuador’s breathtaking volcanoes and Andean landscapes.

Acclimatization & Cultural Highlights

To prepare your body for high-altitude climbing, the expedition begins in Quito, a UNESCO World Heritage city. Here, you will enjoy a guided tour of its colonial center and visit the Equatorial Line Monument, which stands at the midpoint of the world.

The following days include acclimatization hikes on volcanoes under 5,000 m, such as Pasochoa, Pichinchas, Rumiñahui, or Imbabura. These treks allow you to adapt progressively to the altitude while discovering Ecuador’s unique páramo ecosystems and wildlife.

Ecuador Volcanoes Expedition High-Altitude Climbs

Cayambe – Glacier Training & First Summit

Cayambe (5,790 m), the only volcano on Earth located directly on the equator with a permanent glacier. Here, in case necessary, you will practice glacier travel, rope safety, and ice techniques before attempting the summit.

Antisana – A Remote & Wild Ascent

Antisana (5,758 m) is one of Ecuador’s most beautiful and least crowded volcanoes. Its remoteness and vast glaciers make it a unique climb, perfect for developing endurance and technical skills.

Cotopaxi – One of the World’s Highest Active Volcanoes

Cotopaxi (5,897 m). At the summit, you can peer into the massive crater with its sulfur fumaroles and enjoy panoramic views of the Andean Avenue of Volcanoes.

Chimborazo – Ecuador’s Highest Peak & Closest Point to the Sun

Finally, we attempt Chimborazo (6,310 m), Ecuador’s tallest mountain. Because of the Earth’s equatorial bulge, its summit is the farthest point from the planet’s center, making it the closest place to the sun. Standing on Chimborazo’s peak is a once-in-a-lifetime achievement.

Between climbs, we stop in Baños de Agua Santa, a lively town famous for its waterfalls, outdoor cafés, and natural hot springs. This is the perfect spot to recover and enjoy Ecuador’s subtropical climate after demanding ascents.

All high-altitude climbs require glacier equipment, excellent fitness, and strong acclimatization. Although the routes are generally moderate, conditions can change quickly, with hard ice making the climbs very demanding. Rental glacier equipment is available in case you need it.

Our guides are highly trained in mountaineering safety, ensuring that every climb is adapted to your pace and skill level.

  • A combination of cultural highlights, trekking, and major climbs.
  • Certified mountain guides with extensive local expertise.
