Trip Highlights:
Its proximity to Chimborazo makes it an ideal preparation before climbing the larger peak.

Enjoying the up close view of Chimborazo and the valleys below.

Carihuairazo

Carihuairazo lies within the “Reserve de Produccion Faunistica Chimborazo”, a protected ecosystem that preserves the habitat for the native Andean animals. Because of its close proximity- just 10 km/6 miles to the southwest of Carihuairazo, it is often referred to as the sister mountain of Chimborazo. This peak is very seldom climbed but worth the effort.

There are two main peaks at the Carihuairazo massive. The central Maxim at 5,020m/16,469ft is the highest. The lower is Mocha, lying to the southeast. The climb requires beginner snow and ice techniques, but not a particularly high standard of expertise. The location and moderate skill requirements make Carihuairazo an ideal preparation for climbing Chimborazo. It can easily be combined with that tour.

Carihuairazo is thought to have had similar dimensions as its neighbor Chimborazo prior to the last period of activity which destroyed the mass of its base. What remains today is a one and a half kilometer wide, heavily eroded caldera opening to the east. The volcano exhibits no evidence of activity and is considered inactive.

trip itinerary

Day 1: We drive to Urbina (3,200 m/10,498ft). Then from here we hike between Chimborazo and Carihuairazo around six hours to the shelter (4,200m/13,779ft), where we are going to have dinner and to sleep.

Day 2: We get up at 5:00 a.m., have a light breakfast and prepare for today’s climb. We leave the shelter at 6:00 a.m. and begin our climb to the summit of Carihuairazo. After three hours of climbing we will reach the glacier, here we will begin our glacier mountaineering skills review and summit. The return to the hut will take 3 hours, and then we will drive back to Riobamba.

Note:
Every effort will be made to adhere to the itinerary, but unforeseen circumstances may require last minute changes. Weather conditions, road conditions, vehicle breakdowns and the health of climbers can all contribute to schedule alterations. Please be prepared to be flexible when necessary.
